Are You Struggling to Manage Your Neurodivergent Team Members? Here's Why You Shouldn't Throw in the Towel

Updated: Jul 17, 2024

This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the number of autism diagnoses in children has risen to 1 in 100, with that number even higher for male children. Why the gender difference? Psychologists and healthcare providers note that females are often harder to diagnose, citing their ability to mask symptoms more readily than their male counterparts. This means later diagnoses for females, if they are ever diagnosed at all. Why should you take note? Chances are high that if you employ and interact with a decent amount of people, you are serving or mentoring someone with autism.

Popular culture tends to stereotype those who live with autism- think Rain Man or The Good Doctor- but autism is diagnosed as a spectrum for a reason. Those who are autistic can present in myriad ways, with most not being the autistic savants presented in these movies and shows. However, just because not every autistic person can do complicated math problems in a matter of seconds or tell you what day of the week April 6, 1931 was at the drop of a hat, does not mean they do not possess incredible talents.

People living with autism are truly amazing. As an autism mom, I witness strengths and talents I wish I possessed in my children and those I work with everyday. Here are just a few talents of autistic people:

  • They are VERY detail-oriented

  • When they start a project that is meaningful to them, they must see it through

  • They understand the world in black and white terms, and can simplify complicated situations

  • They work well independently and take ownership of their projects

  • Their need for routine means they are consistent- they will show up for work at the same time everyday and leave the same way

  • They can provide unique perspectives on problems and offer creative solutions simply because their brains work differently than neurotypical people

Each autistic person has a plethora of other individual talents, but this list should provide you with enough reason to seek out working with people on the autism spectrum. They could be the secret sauce for your organization in reaching the next level of success.
